As of my knowledge beams are to be provided considering the span of a slab... if slab is one way slab (ly/lx >2) then one configuration and if two way slab other configuration...
coming to loading on beam .... the rectangular slab should be divided into four trapeziums and load is taken on each beam as in IS 456:2000
